Overview
Greyhound racing in the United States is contested over distances of 300 yards to 770 yards. They run over a flat conventional dirt surface. In any given race there can be as many as 8 runners however there are often times fewer per race.
There is a class structure that is followed by most greyhound tracks, albeit some have added levels, that is described as follows;
Class
| Stakes |
Top Competition |
| Grade AA |
Top Competition** |
| Grade A |
Very High Quality |
| Grade B |
Good Quality |
| Grade C |
Middle Quality |
| Grade D |
Lowest Quality |
| Grade J |
Juvenile** |
| Grade M |
Maidens |
** Some racetracks do not have Grades J or AA.
When a greyhound wins their race then they must move up to the next higher Grade available. If they continue a winning streak then they must continually race against better animals. A greyhound is only moved down in quality once they have not finished in a top 5 positions in 4 consecutive races.
Race meetings normally consist of one or two cards per day (matinee, evening or both) with ten to fifteen races per card ( some tracks have as many as twenty) Races usually start every fifteen minutes.
