Overview
Distances: Thoroughbred racing in North America is run over tracks that range in circumference from 4 furlongs(1/2 mile) over a bullring to 8 furlongs(1 mile). They compete between distances of 2 furlongs(1/4 mile) and up to 16 furlongs (2 miles), while the majority of the races in North America are contested around the 6 furlong (3/4 mile) distance.
Surfaces: There are 3 main surface types on which Thoroughbred’s compete; Dirt, Turf and Synthetic. Within the synthetic category there are 3 types that exist in North America; Poly track, Cushion and Tapeta all of which have their own tendancies but each most closely resemble the Turf surface for horses.
Class: The Classic distance for this breed is 10 furlongs or a mile and a quarter with the best known race being The Kentucky Derby run on the first Saturday in May each year. The top quality Stakes races are given a Graded rank from 1 to 3 with 1 being the best. Typically there are only a few top quality runners a year and the vast majority of animals compete in the claiming races where they are eligible to be bought each and every time that they run.
The Triple Crown consists of the Kentucky Derby, The Preakness and The Belmont and like all Derby races, these races are exclusive to 3 year olds.
Horses may begin competing in April of their 2 year old year, however many do not until they have matured as this is comparable to an early teenager in humans. Jockeys wear the silks of the horse’s owners or in some cases those designated by the post position of the local race track, however this generally only occurs at smaller venues.
There are at times fair meets that offer Arabian and Mule races and while they can be handicapped, these animals run at typically slower speeds.
